John Lewis names Will Kernan as Managing Director

The John Lewis Partnership has announced that Peter Ruis will step down as Managing Director of John Lewis in mid-September. Ruis, who rejoined the company in January 2024, is leaving to pursue new projects. During his tenure, he oversaw the reintroduction of the ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ price promise, digital platform upgrades, and the start of an £800 million investment programme covering stores, technology, and hospitality.

Will Kernan, a current non-executive director on the Partnership board, will succeed Ruis. Kernan brings 35 years of retail experience from roles at River Island, The White Company, Wiggle, and New Look. He is expected to take charge ahead of the retailer’s peak Christmas trading period. His leadership will focus on continuing the company’s investment plans and driving growth amidst cautious consumer spending and rising costs.
