John Lynch addresses Mac Jones trade rumors
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has declined to confirm whether other NFL teams have inquired about backup quarterback Mac Jones following recent injuries across the league. Speaking on KNBR, Lynch addressed the trade rumors sparked by the New York Giants losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the remainder of the season.
Lynch emphasized the importance of depth at the quarterback position, noting that the 49ers are in a position of strength with Brock Purdy as the starter, Mac Jones as the primary backup, and Kurtis Rourke as an additional option. He compared the current roster structure to historical examples, such as the era of Joe Montana and Steve Young, highlighting how having a capable backup provides insulation for the team.
Jones previously demonstrated his value by starting eight games last season during an injury to Purdy, posting a 5-3 record with 2,151 passing yards and 13 touchdowns.
