John Malkovich cancels Tel Aviv performance over fake quotes

Actor John Malkovich has cancelled his scheduled performance of “The Music Critic” in Tel Aviv following the publication of fabricated quotes attributed to him in a press release. The unauthorized statements, which expressed excitement about returning to Israel and feeling a sense of solidarity with the Israeli audience, were drafted by a PR company hired by the Israeli promoter.

Malkovich stated that he was never consulted before the quotes were printed and that the phrases do not reflect his actual feelings. He described the incident as “unacceptable and untenable,” leading to his decision to withdraw from the production. The satirical play, conceived by violinist Aleksey Igudesman, was slated to perform at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium in April.

The Israeli PR firm and the producer have issued apologies, acknowledging that the incorrect quotes were sent due to a misunderstanding and were not authorized by the actor or his representatives.
