John Mary recounts childhood trauma during Nigerian religious conflicts

John Mary, a footballer for the Serbian club Mladost Lučani, has shared a traumatic account of his childhood during religious conflicts in Kaduna, Nigeria. Mary described how his family was caught in the violence at the end of the 20th century.

He recalled witnessing soldiers sharpening curved knives and seeing widespread panic in the streets. His family, including his parents, sisters, and a newborn baby, became trapped on their estate. Mary recounted a harrowing moment when his family was forced to their knees, awaiting execution.

His family ultimately survived due to the intervention of an influential local community member who helped them evacuate the area. Mary stated that he had remained silent about these experiences for 20 years, but chose to speak out to release the emotional burden. He noted that the experience taught him not to hate others based on their religious beliefs.
