John McEnroe calls for player autonomy in tennis scheduling
Tennis legend John McEnroe has advocated for players to have more control over their own schedules to mitigate the impact of injuries on the sport. He suggested that players should be allowed to prioritize major tournaments, such as the Grand Slams, and then determine their remaining schedule based on their physical condition.
McEnroe’s comments follow significant absences from top-tier players. World number one Jannik Sinner has been unable to compete in China due to a knee injury, and Carlos Alcaraz missed both Roland Garros and Wimbledon due to wrist issues. Other notable players, including Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper, have also faced extended absences.
McEnroe criticized the current mandatory tournament requirements, arguing that the physical demands of the modern game have increased significantly. He suggested that players should have the freedom to play fewer tournaments if they are winning the major ones, rather than being forced to meet specific participation quotas to maintain their rankings.
