John McEnroe supports Novak Djokovic’s proposal for shorter tennis matches

Tennis legend John McEnroe has expressed support for a controversial proposal by Novak Djokovic to shorten tennis matches. Djokovic has suggested replacing traditional six-game sets with sets decided over four games and potentially abolishing the advantage rule at deuce to ensure matches do not exceed two hours.

McEnroe argued that the sport must adapt to changing audience habits, noting that “people’s attention spans are shorter than ever.” While acknowledging the contradiction in a player known for physical endurance supporting shorter matches, McEnroe believes the change could help maintain viewer engagement.

Separately, McEnroe reflected on his long broadcasting career, which began in 1992. He admitted that he initially resented being told he was a better commentator than a player, but has since come to appreciate the role, comparing a commentator’s job to adding “icing on top” of the players’ performance to make the sport more interesting for viewers.
