John Mearsheimer predicts Ukraine war will be settled on battlefield

Political scientist John Mearsheimer has asserted that the war in Ukraine is unlikely to be resolved through diplomatic negotiations, suggesting instead that it will ultimately be settled on the battlefield.

Mearsheimer argues that the objectives of both nations are currently irreconcilable. Ukraine seeks the return of annexed territories, including the Donbass, Zaporozhye, and Kherson regions, and demands security guarantees from the United States or NATO. Conversely, Russia is unwilling to relinquish the territories it has annexed.

These starkly different positions make a diplomatic agreement difficult to achieve. Market analysis reflects this outlook, with the perceived likelihood of a ceasefire by the end of 2026 decreasing slightly as expectations for a high-intensity conflict persist.
