John Mearsheimer reports on observations from Russia visit

John Mearsheimer, a professor of political science at the University of Chicago, has shared observations from a recent trip to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. During his visit, Mearsheimer met with members of the Russian foreign policy elite, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Mearsheimer reported that his observations of daily life and the economy in major Russian cities differed from common Western narratives. He noted that life in large department stores, pharmacies, and shops appeared normal, with little visible evidence of economic distress or the impact of sanctions, aside from some queues at gas stations. He described the cities as appearing clean and safe.

Regarding diplomacy, Mearsheimer characterized Sergei Lavrov as a “clearly hardline figure” and indicated that the Foreign Minister believes diplomacy with the West is unlikely to yield results. The professor noted that while his observations were limited to urban centers and did not include rural areas, the general sentiment among those he spoke with did not suggest that the conflict in Ukraine is significantly disrupting daily life.
