John Michael Schmitz enters concussion protocol amid Giants injury concerns
New York Giants center John Michael Schmitz is reportedly in concussion protocol after leaving a Friday practice session following a collision. Head coach John Harbaugh noted that Schmitz "got his bell rung," and the lineman was absent from the team's final training camp practice in West Virginia on Saturday.
In response to the injury, the Giants signed veteran free agent center Brenden Jaimes, who previously played 50 games for the Los Angeles Chargers. The team is also facing depth concerns at the position, as backup Lucas Patrick has been sidelined with a knee injury.
Schmitz, a 2023 second-round pick, has faced ongoing challenges with consistency and injuries. According to Pro Football Focus, his offensive grade last season was 60.8, ranking him 28th out of 40 qualifying centers. While he has shown strength in run blocking, analysts have pointed to struggles with lateral movement and pass protection consistency.
