John Nwawuto Anoruo sentenced for fake lawyer scheme in Lagos

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja convicted John Nwawuto Anoruo on 4 August 2026 for impersonating a legal practitioner and using a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Justice A. M. Lawal presided over the case, and Anoruo pleaded guilty to two counts: fraudulently employing a counterfeit NBA seal and falsely representing himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a certified lawyer.

Anoruo, who ran a legal and educational consultancy in Ikorodu, was arrested by the EFCC on 20 April 2026 after investigations revealed that a petition and a withdrawal letter he submitted to the commission bore a forged NBA seal obtained from an undisclosed Lagos business centre. He claimed to hold a law degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2018) but admitted he never attended the Nigerian Law School. The court sentenced him for the offenses, underscoring the seriousness of legal impersonation and document fraud in Nigeria.
