John Paul I: Remembering the 34-day papacy of Albino Luciani

The anniversary of the election of Albino Luciani, who took the name John Paul I, is observed on August 26. Elected on August 26, 1978, following the death of Paul VI, his papacy lasted only 34 days before his unexpected death on September 28, 1978.

During his brief tenure, John Paul I outlined six fundamental pillars for his service: implementing the conclusions of the Second Vatican Council, maintaining church discipline, prioritizing evangelization, continuing ecumenical efforts, fostering constructive dialogue with the modern world, and promoting peace. He emphasized that evangelization is the primary duty of the Church and should involve all believers rather than just clergy.

Known as the ‘Pope of the Smile,’ he was beatified by Pope Francis in 2022. He was succeeded by Karol Wojtyła, who became Pope John Paul II.
