John Ritter's 2003 Death Remembered by Katey Sagal
John Ritter, best known for "Three's Company" and the ABC sitcom "8 Simple Rules," died on September 11, 2003, after suffering an aortic dissection. He was 54 years old.
In a 2024 interview on Ted Danson's "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" podcast, Katey Sagal said she had done press with Ritter that afternoon at about 4 p.m. and learned he had died by 10 p.m. She said she still feels his presence and energy around her.
Ritter’s collapse occurred after the cast had completed three episodes of the second season of "8 Simple Rules." Production halted for roughly a month before resuming with James Garner joining the cast. The series continued for three seasons before ABC cancelled it in April 2005. Sagal later testified briefly in a 2008 wrongful‑death trial related to Ritter’s death.
