John Swinney claims United Kingdom is in a ‘perilous state’

Scottish First Minister John Swinney has described the United Kingdom as being in a ‘perilous state’ and ‘falling apart’. Speaking to the Press Association, Swinney argued that the political landscape across the four nations indicates a breakdown in the union.

Swinney cited recent election results as evidence, noting the SNP’s fifth consecutive term in Scotland, the formation of a Plaid Cymru government in Wales, and Sinn Féin’s leadership in Northern Ireland under First Minister Michelle O’Neill. He criticized Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s recent travels, characterizing them as a ‘lecturing tour’ rather than a ‘listening tour’.

The dispute follows the Scottish Government’s publication of a draft Bill regarding a second independence referendum. Swinney also criticized the Prime Minister’s dismissal of calls for a referendum on Irish unification, calling the refusal to engage with such demands ‘completely unsustainable’.
