John Swinney defends £98,000 US travel bill

Scottish First Minister John Swinney and his entourage spent approximately £98,442 on travel to the United States to support the Scotland men’s national team during their first World Cup appearance in 28 years. The expenses, released via freedom-of-information requests, included business-class flights for Mr. Swinney, his private secretary John Webster, and special adviser Colin McAllister, which totaled over £45,000.

In addition to supporting the national team in cities such as Boston and Miami, the Scottish Government stated the trips were intended to facilitate trade, tourism, culture, and investment talks, including meetings in Kentucky.

Mr. Swinney defended the expenditure, stating the government sought to “minimise” costs and noting that high costs often arise from the intense pressure of booking flights under tight schedules. Justice Secretary Neil Gray added that the travel was a “proportionate use” of funds to ensure ministers could arrive ready to engage in international connections. While senior officials traveled business class, Sports Minister Maree Todd and other staff utilized economy-class flights.
