John Swinney seeks legal mechanism for Scottish independence referendum

Scottish First Minister John Swinney has written to Prime Minister Andy Burnham to request discussions on establishing a legal mechanism for a second Scottish independence referendum. The move follows comments made by the Prime Minister in the House of Commons, where he suggested that Scotland could face a situation similar to Northern Ireland, where a border poll is considered if public opinion shifts significantly.

While Swinney interpreted these remarks as a “big shift” and an acceptance of the principle that a vote should occur if there is clear public support for independence, Andy Burnham has since clarified his position. Burnham stated that a second referendum remains “off limits,” arguing that the focus should remain on economic growth and the cost of living rather than constitutional change.

UK Secretary of State for Scotland Douglas Alexander echoed this stance, asserting that there is no consensus for another referendum and that such a move is not currently on the agenda.
