John Tavares contests $8 million tax bill in Canadian court

Toronto Maple Leafs centre John Tavares is appearing in the Tax Court of Canada to contest an $8 million tax bill. The dispute centers on the taxation of a $15 million signing bonus from his 2018 contract when he moved from the New York Islanders to Toronto.

The Canada Revenue Agency classifies the payment as employment income, which is subject to a tax rate exceeding 50 per cent. Tavares argues the funds should be categorized as an ‘inducement’ to sign, which would allow for a 15 per cent tax rate in the United States, a tax he has already paid.

The case carries implications for the NHL, as many superstar athletes utilize contracts heavily weighted toward signing bonuses to benefit from cross-border tax treatments and to provide financial protection during potential league lockouts. There are no allegations of wrongdoing or dishonesty in the case.
