John Wayne excluded son-in-law from inheritance
Legendary American actor John Wayne, known for his iconic Western roles, left a complex personal and financial legacy. While his children received their shares of his estate following his death in 1979, Wayne explicitly excluded his son-in-law, Donald LaKava, from his will.
LaKava, the husband of Wayne’s eldest daughter Mary Anne ‘Toni’ Wayne, had previously served as the actor's financial manager. However, a series of poor investments led to significant financial losses for Wayne. According to biographer James S. Olson, the relationship soured after LaKava’s management style and spending disagreements caused Wayne to lose millions of dollars. Consequently, Wayne ensured that LaKava would receive nothing from the inheritance, even stipulating that LaKava could not inherit from Toni should she pass away before him.
Beyond his financial affairs, Wayne’s private life was marked by personal complexities that contrasted with his heroic onscreen persona. He was married three times and faced various personal struggles, including issues with alcohol and a reputation for being a womanizer. Despite these personal challenges, he remains one of the most significant stars in the history of classic American cinema.
