John Wilson completes first feature film ‘The History of Concrete’

Filmmaker John Wilson, creator of the HBO series ‘How To with John Wilson’, has completed his first feature-length documentary, ‘The History of Concrete’. The 100-minute film explores the ubiquitous urban material through Wilson’s signature observational style.

The project originated from Wilson’s attempt to repair a cracked concrete foundation in his Queens apartment. While he initially pitched the film as an environmental documentary regarding infrastructure, he faced difficulties securing financing. He eventually reframed the project after attending a Writer’s Guild of America workshop on Hallmark movie conventions.

Critics note that the film functions similarly to an extended episode of his previous series, utilizing an innocent inquiry to explore intimate human moments. The documentary includes various facts about concrete, particularly in the context of New York, while also touching on themes such as local marathons and aging musicians.
