Johnny Gargano has officially ended his months-long character arc involving a lack of motivation, during which he frequently appeared lying face-down backstage. Following a competitive match against CM Punk in Cleveland, Ohio, Gargano signaled a return to form by announcing on social media that he is ‘back’.

On the September 11 episode of WWE SmackDown, Gargano confronted Sami Zayn to demand a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship. Zayn, who expressed a desire to reclaim the title from CM Punk in Mexico City, informed Gargano that he would receive the first opportunity to challenge for the championship if Zayn successfully defeats Punk.
