Johnny Marr guitar collection to be auctioned in London

A selection of Johnny Marr’s personal guitar collection is currently on display in London ahead of an auction at Christie’s scheduled for September 17. The collection, titled ‘Guitars: The Johnny Marr Collection’, features 111 lots, including approximately 80 guitars used by the musician during his career with The Smiths, The The, and as a solo artist.

Notable items include a 1960 Gibson ES-355 Cherry Red, estimated to be worth between £100,000 and £150,000, and a 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo used for hits such as ‘This Charming Man’, estimated at £60,000 to £80,000. The Rickenbacker was famously lent to Noel Gallagher for the cover of the Oasis single ‘Supersonic’. Other items include a 1971 Martin D-28 and a 1977 Gretsch semi-hollow-body electric guitar.

Musician Noel Gallagher joined Marr to view the collection, remarking that Marr has ‘always been a bit gung-ho’ with his instruments.
