Johnny Marr releases new album and reflects on The Smiths legacy
Johnny Marr, the founding guitarist of The Smiths, is releasing his fifth full-length studio album titled ‘The Age Of Everything’. The record, which was written in London, road-tested in North America, and recorded in Manchester, explores the tension and velocity of modern life and the cultural feeling of being overwhelmed by technology and information.
Marr described the album as a cathartic project that views cultural overload not just as a dystopian condition, but as a source of possibility. The songs are characterized as lean, fast, and dynamic, using Marr’s guitar work to process the rapid pace of contemporary culture.
In a recent interview, Marr also reflected on the legacy of The Smiths. He noted that the band sought to avoid ‘cheesy blues’ and traditional masculinity, instead creating a melancholic sound that defined the 1980s. He addressed the long-standing rift with former bandmate Morrissey, noting that despite a potential reunion offer from AEG Entertainment, the two remain estranged due to differing political views and personal tensions.
