Johns Hopkins and University of Vienna Advance Microbiome Research
A study led by Johns Hopkins University identified the protein claudin‑4 as the cellular receptor for the BFT toxin produced by Bacteroides fragilis. The toxin weakens the colon’s protective barrier and promotes inflammation that can lead to colorectal cancer. In mouse experiments, blocking the claudin‑4 interaction protected the bowel from toxin‑induced damage, suggesting a possible route for future preventive therapies.
Researchers at the University of Vienna’s Bruker Daltonics Center of Excellence reported new mass‑spectrometry strategies that can simultaneously measure thousands of microbial and host proteins in fecal samples. By comparing five analytical approaches, they established methods that deliver high sensitivity, reproducibility, and functional insight, advancing metaproteomics and enabling more detailed studies of gut‑microbiome activity in health and disease.
