Johns Hopkins researchers develop AI wearable sensors for blood pressure monitoring
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have developed a system using wearable sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor blood pressure, potentially offering a non-invasive alternative to arterial lines in intensive care units (ICUs) and operating rooms.
Currently, the standard for continuous monitoring is an invasive arterial catheter, which carries risks of bleeding, clotting, and infection, while also limiting patient mobility. The new AI-driven technology has demonstrated the ability to generate blood pressure readings nearly as accurately as these invasive methods during initial patient tests.
Beyond the ICU, the technology could provide continuous health monitoring for individuals with hypertension, similar to how wearable devices are used for glucose monitoring in diabetic patients.
