Johns Hopkins researchers test psilocybin for post-Lyme disease symptoms

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University conducted a trial using psilocybin to address symptoms in patients suffering from post-treatment Lyme disease (PTLD). The study focused on individuals who had completed recommended antibiotic treatments but continued to experience debilitating symptoms such as fatigue, pain, and cognitive difficulties.

Published in the journal ‘Scientific Reports’, the study did not aim to treat an active infection or kill microbes, but rather to alleviate the persistent neurological and physical sequelae that remain after the initial bacterial infection has been addressed. The findings highlight a growing area of medical research into using psychedelic compounds to manage chronic symptoms that traditional antibiotics fail to resolve.
