Johns Hopkins scientists develop 4D mapping of hair follicle formation

Scientists at Johns Hopkins Medicine have developed a new 3D mapping technology that captures molecular snapshots of hair follicles to reconstruct their development over time. By adding the fourth dimension of time to 3D data, researchers created a stop-motion animation of how these organs form.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and published in the journal Cell, used mice to identify the distinct phases of follicle formation. This process involves precursor cells organizing spatially, differentiating into various cell types, and finally morphing into mature follicles.

Researchers compared normal mice to hairless mice lacking the Foxn1 gene, which is essential for hair growth. This comparison aims to provide insights into congenital conditions and medical causes of hair loss, potentially leading to new preventative and therapeutic treatments.
