Ghana marks Kwame Nkrumah's 117th anniversary with calls for policy application

As Ghana commemorates the 117th birth anniversary of its first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, on Founders’ Day, political leaders and academics are calling for a renewed focus on his developmental legacy.

Former President John Dramani Mahama and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) have emphasized the need to draw inspiration from Nkrumah’s visions of Pan-African unity, self-reliance, and economic independence. The CPP specifically urged the protection and revival of state-owned enterprises to honor Nkrumah’s commitment to nationalism and state-led development.

Academic perspectives, including insights from University of Ghana historian Prof. Samuel Ntewusu, suggest that honoring Nkrumah should involve critically applying his policies regarding resource extraction, education, and industrialization to solve modern challenges rather than merely holding ceremonies.

Additionally, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia highlighted the personal impact of Nkrumah’s free education policies on his own life and urged journalists to maintain rigorous scrutiny of government spending and development projects to ensure accountability.
