British Columbia wildfires trigger evacuations and smoke warnings FAST-MOVING

British Columbia is facing significant wildfire activity, with over 120 fires burning across the province. In the Okanagan, the Bradley Creek, Quilpituk Creek, and Bald Range fires have burned more than 25,000 hectares. The Johnson Creek wildfire has burned approximately 266 hectares, leading to helicopter evacuations of four people and two pets near Beaton.

In the North Island, 14 wildfires have been recorded, with three currently classified as out of control. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry is scheduled to hold a news conference regarding wildfire smoke warnings that have triggered orange and yellow air quality alerts across much of southern B.C.

In response to the crisis, emergency services from the Bulkley Valley, including Smithers and Telkwa, have deployed personnel and equipment to assist in Penticton, Cache Creek, Merritt, and Clinton. Additionally, Ains Reid, a student at UBC Okanagan, raised over $7,000 for evacuees by cycling 270 kilometres from Saskatoon to Regina.
