Johnson & Johnson to Pay $5.5 B to Settle U.S. Talc Cancer Lawsuits FAST-MOVING
Johnson & Johnson announced an estimated $5.5 billion settlement to resolve roughly 76,000 lawsuits alleging that its talc‑based baby powder and other products caused ovarian cancer in the United States. The agreement covers about 99.75 % of outstanding talc‑related claims and will become final only if at least 95 % of claimants in federal or state courts accept it.
The company said it will make a $3 billion payment in 2027 with additional payments in 2028; the total amount could rise above $7 billion depending on how many eligible claimants join the deal. Vice‑president of litigation Erik Haas described the claims as “meritless,” while plaintiffs’ lawyer Chris Seeger called the settlement fair and noted it could ultimately exceed $7 billion.
J&J has previously settled most asbestos‑related talc cases and stopped selling talc‑based baby powder in the U.S. in 2020 and worldwide in 2023. The settlement does not extend to a separate UK case involving more than 7,000 potential claimants.
