Johor Darul Ta’zim players Samu Castillejo and Arif Aiman make headlines

Former Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) star Samu Castillejo has announced his retirement from professional football. The 31-year-old Spanish winger shared the decision via an Instagram video, expressing that while the choice was difficult, he is grateful to have fulfilled his lifelong dream of playing the sport. Castillejo, who previously played for clubs including AC Milan, Valencia, and Villarreal, thanked his teammates, coaches, and fans for their support throughout his career.

Meanwhile, JDT winger Arif Aiman Hanapi has addressed comparisons to Lionel Messi. In a documentary featuring British content creator Manny, the 24-year-old dismissed the ‘Messi Malaysia’ label, stating he considers himself an ordinary player who relies on hard work, discipline, and consistency. Arif highlighted his strengths in one-on-one situations, dribbling, and providing assists.

JDT striker Bergson da Silva praised Arif’s development from an academy prospect to a vital member of the squad. As of October 2025, Arif has recorded 61 goals and 66 assists in 170 appearances for JDT, making him the club's highest-scoring local player in history.
