Johor dog attack on toddler sparks calls for pet ban

A two-year-old girl, Nur Haira Watikah, is receiving treatment at Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Bahru after being attacked by five dogs in Peserai, Batu Pahat. The incident occurred on September 5 at a residence in Kampung Tambak, Sungai Kelambu. Following the attack, the child underwent surgery and is reported to be in stable condition.

In response to the incident, the victim's family has denied allegations that they owned the dogs involved. Family member Shahrizal Mohd Hanafi clarified that the animals were descendants of hunting dogs that lived as wild animals in the nearby brush area. He also refuted claims that the child had provoked the animals.

The attack has sparked public debate regarding pet ownership and stray animals. Celebrity preacher Haris Ismail has called for a ban on the public keeping dogs as pets in Malaysia, citing religious guidance and concerns over public safety following recent incidents of dog attacks on children.
