Joinville property occupation ordered to vacate by Federal Court

A Federal Court has ordered the eviction of a property on Rua Aquidaban in Joinville, Santa Catarina, within five days. The building, which belongs to the Union, was occupied on August 1 by the Movimento de Mulheres Olga Benário.

The social movement occupied the vacant house with the intention of converting it into a shelter for women victims of violence. The group had been in negotiations with the Union to secure the use of the property before the occupation took place.

The Union itself requested the repossession of the property and is seeking compensation for the illegal occupation, including 10% of the updated value of the land per year, as well as reimbursement for any damages caused to the building. The Secretariat of Union Patrimony (SPU) stated that it is currently analyzing a formal request from the movement to use the site for the protection and support of women.
