Joko Anwar announces horror prequel ‘Satan's Slaves: Origin’ for 2027

Director Joko Anwar is preparing the third installment of his horror franchise, ‘Satan's Slaves: Origin’ (Pengabdi Setan 3: Origin), which is scheduled for a theatrical release in 2027. The film serves as a prequel to the 2017 and 2022 entries, aiming to explore the origins of the demonic pact and the history of characters such as Darminah and Batara.

Described as Anwar’s most ambitious production, the film will span two continents and be filmed in seven languages: Indonesian, Alsatian, Portuguese, Javanese, Dutch, Turkish, and Latin. The narrative is set to include a 16th-century outbreak of mass hysteria in Strasbourg and a 17th-century setting at a haunted lighthouse on Java’s southern coast.

Barunson E&A, the South Korean studio known for ‘Parasite’, has been brought on to handle international sales. The project will be presented to global buyers at the Toronto Film Festival’s inaugural market this September. The production is a collaboration involving Rapi Films, Come and See Pictures, Sky Media, and Legacy Pictures.
