Joko Widodo diploma controversy moves to new legal and political stages

The controversy surrounding the alleged fake diplomas of Indonesia's 7th President, Joko Widodo, has entered a new phase involving legal proceedings and political disputes. Roy Suryo has filed his fifth pre-trial motion at the South Jakarta District Court, specifically seeking compensation. This latest legal attempt follows previous motions that were declared inadmissible due to the omission of the Ministry of Finance as a party; Suryo has now included the Ministry to address this deficiency. The first hearing for this motion is scheduled for August 31, 2026.

Simultaneously, political tensions are rising. PDIP politician Bambang Beathor Suryadi has urged 15 of Widodo's former university classmates, who are scheduled to testify in related legal cases, to withdraw from the proceedings. Beathor has made claims regarding the authenticity of Widodo's educational documents, alleging they were fabricated for previous election requirements. In contrast, the group Bonjowi has proposed a “third way” approach, focusing on investigating the administrative processes and supporting documentation behind the issuance of the diplomas rather than merely debating their authenticity.
