Joko Widodo faces scrutiny over political activity and family influence
Former Indonesian President Joko Widodo has faced scrutiny regarding his political involvement following his term. Political observer Selamat Ginting noted that Jokowi’s recent activities, described as a ‘political safari,’ suggest he maintains active political interests despite previous intentions to return to a private life in Solo. Ginting pointed to the strategic positions held by Jokowi’s family members, including Vice President Gibran Rakabuming and Governor Bobby Nasution, as drivers for his continued engagement.
In a separate event, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao visited Jokowi’s residence in Solo. During the visit, Gusmao joined a keroncong musical group in singing ‘Bengawan Solo’ before engaging in a private meeting with the former president.
Additionally, cultural figure Mohamad Sobary criticized Jokowi’s recent use of Javanese philosophy. While Jokowi cited the proverb ‘lamun siro sekti, ojo mateni’—advising those in power not to suppress others—Sobary argued the sentiment was hypocritical, citing the legal pressures faced by activists and journalists during Jokowi’s administration.
