Jon Batiste releases three new albums reimagining Mozart and Monk
Musician Jon Batiste has released three new albums as part of his ongoing Batiste Piano Series: ‘Black Mozart (Vol. 2),’ ‘Monk Meditations (Vol. 3),’ and ‘Monk Movements (Vol. 4).’ These projects follow his 2024 release, ‘Beethoven Blues.’
In ‘Black Mozart,’ Batiste reinterprets the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by integrating Black American musical traditions, including jazz, blues, ragtime, and stride. The album draws from classical foundations such as Piano Sonata No. 16 in C major and Symphony No. 40 in G minor to create a conversation across musical traditions.
The two Thelonious Monk projects offer different stylistic approaches. ‘Monk Movements’ reframes Monk’s standards, such as ‘Blue Monk’ and ‘Brilliant Corners,’ as contemporary classical pieces for solo piano. Conversely, ‘Monk Meditations’ provides a contemplative, new-age-inflected soundscape designed for ambient or meditative listening, focusing on the spiritual aspects of Monk’s compositions.
