Jon Fosse and Erik Poppe collaborate on film ‘Kjærast’

The film ‘Kjærast’ (also referred to as ‘Min Kære’), based on a minimalist screenplay by Nobel laureate Jon Fosse, is set for a wide theatrical release in Norway. Directed by Erik Poppe, the film is described as a contemplative Norwegian love story exploring the fragility of love and the power of longing.

The narrative follows Asle, a musician and sailor, and Gerd, who becomes pregnant after a brief encounter. The story examines the consequences of their life choices as Asle spends much of his time at sea, leaving Gerd to raise their son alone in a small Norwegian coastal town.

Director Erik Poppe revealed that during the film's premiere presentation at the Norwegian Film Institute, he chose to leave the theater while Fosse watched the adaptation for the first time. Poppe noted that while there were disagreements during the long development process of the project, which originated from a script written by Fosse in 1997, the collaborators ultimately reached an agreement on the final vision.
