The opening round of the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills was delayed by dense fog and later halted because of darkness, leaving about 50 players still on the course. Officials softened the greens with watering and wind conditions eased in the afternoon.

Wyndham Clark posted a six‑under 66, seizing a four‑stroke lead after an eagle and two birdies. Sam Stevens sat at –2, Rory McIlroy at –1, while Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson and others trailed further back. Clark extended his advantage early in the second round, maintaining the lead.

A spectator briefly appeared to pick up McIlroy’s ball on the fourth hole; the USGA confirmed the ball was not lifted and no penalty applied. The tournament offers a $22.5 million purse and the cut line is projected near +4.
