Jonas Gahr Støre and Zohran Mamdani discuss AI in education

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met in New York to discuss artificial intelligence policies in education. The meeting, held during Støre’s attendance at the United Nations General Assembly, included a visit to PS59 Beekman Hill International, a school that has already implemented strict AI usage policies for students.

The leaders focused on the necessity of balancing the potential benefits of AI with essential safeguards for young learners. Mamdani highlighted New York’s existing restrictions on AI tools for schoolchildren, while Støre shared Norway’s approach to integrating technology into the classroom while ensuring students maintain necessary contact with teachers.

As a personal gesture, Støre presented Mayor Mamdani with a signed Arsenal football jersey from Norwegian captain Martin Ødegaard. The gift was intended to acknowledge the Mayor’s support for the English Premier League club.
