Norway political leaders debate economy and taxes in Arendal

Norwegian political leaders gathered in Arendal for the annual party leader debate, marking a significant step in the upcoming election cycle. The debate featured intense exchanges regarding economic policy, specifically fuel taxes and the cost of living.

Sylvi Listhaug, leader of the Progress Party (Frp), criticized Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labor Party) for failing to address rising costs for food, electricity, and fuel. Listhaug warned of a ‘quadruple squeeze’ on households. In response, Støre defended the government's crisis measures, arguing that excessive spending could negatively impact interest rates.

Ine Eriksen Søreide made her debut in the debate as the new leader of the Conservative Party (Høyre). She faced scrutiny over the party's decision not to extend temporary fuel tax cuts beyond September. Søreide maintained that the party cannot continuously react to every crisis with temporary packages.

Polling indicates that while Listhaug leads the Progress Party, Jonas Gahr Støre remains the most preferred candidate for Prime Minister among the general population. Meanwhile, the debate highlighted a shifting political landscape where the Progress Party is increasingly positioned as a primary opponent to the Labor Party in local and national contests.
