Jonas Gahr Støre visits Kyiv amid escalating conflict

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre arrived in Kyiv on Sunday morning to participate in a summit with Ukrainian and Nordic-Baltic leaders. The visit follows a period of intense escalation, with July seeing 437 civilian deaths in Ukraine—the highest monthly toll since the war began in 2022.

Støre highlighted a critical shortage of air defense systems, specifically noting that Ukraine lacks sufficient protection against high-speed ballistic missiles. He emphasized that the current situation is increasingly dangerous and suggested that the conflict should move toward a political process. He also criticized Russia for targeting civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, calling it a violation of international law.

Simultaneously, Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened new attacks against Ukraine’s most sensitive economic sectors, claiming Ukraine has opened a ‘Pandora’s box’ through its drone strikes on Russian oil facilities and warehouses.
