Jonatan Alfvén convicted of gross defamation in Sweden

Jonatan Alfvén has been convicted of gross defamation by the Stockholm District Court after publishing the names, images, and residential locations of men convicted of sexual offenses on Facebook and Instagram.

Although the information shared was based on public court judgments, the court ruled that disseminating this information to a large and undefined group of people was not justifiable. As a result, Alfvén has been ordered to pay a total of 350,000 SEK in damages.

The case has raised questions regarding the Swedish principle of public access to official documents. While the state makes court judgments available for public inspection, the ruling highlights a legal distinction where recounting such public information can be deemed criminal if the dissemination is not considered justifiable.
