Jonatan Christie projected to reach BWF world number one ranking
Indonesian men's singles badminton player Jonatan Christie is projected to ascend to the number one spot in the BWF world rankings following the 2026 BWF World Championships. Although Christie was eliminated in the round of 16 by Denmark's Rasmus Gemke, the performance of his closest rivals has cleared his path to the top ranking.
Several top-ranked players suffered early exits during the tournament. China's Shi Yu Qi, previously ranked first, was eliminated in the round of 64. Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Denmark's Anders Antonsen both exited in the quarterfinals, while France's Christo Popov also failed to advance deep into the competition. Additionally, Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen, who held a significant points advantage, lost in the semifinals to Japan's Kodai Naraoka.
Based on current projections, Christie is expected to hold the top position with approximately 87,631 points when the new rankings are released on August 25, 2026. This would place him slightly ahead of Christo Popov.
