Jonatan Cristaldo reveals struggle with depression and alcoholism

Former professional footballer Jonatan ‘Churry’ Cristaldo has opened up about his struggles with depression, alcoholism, and suicidal ideation in an interview with TyC Sports. The 37-year-old Argentine striker, who has played for clubs including Palmeiras, Vélez Sarsfield, and Oriente Petrolero, described using alcohol as an ‘escape’ to cope with emotional pain and insomnia.

Cristaldo detailed a critical moment when he was driving on the Panamericana highway experiencing suicidal thoughts. He credited his therapist with saving his life after she called him during that crisis. He noted that his mental health challenges began during his time playing in Ukraine, where he felt isolated from his family.

Currently without a club after rescinding his contract with Independiente Petrolero in July, Cristaldo emphasized that he no longer consumes alcohol. His career has spanned several countries, including stints in Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Bolivia.
