Jonatan Vseviov endorsed as Social Democratic candidate for Estonia's prime minister

The Social Democratic Party (SDE) has formally endorsed Jonatan Vseviov as its candidate for prime minister in the 2027 Riigikogu elections. Vseviov, the former secretary general of Estonia’s foreign ministry, stepped down from his diplomatic post on November 1 to pursue the candidacy.

In his inaugural political speech to the party council, Vseviov outlined a vision centered on three primary pillars: increasing Estonia's influence within Europe, reviving economic growth, and strengthening social security. He argued that existing policies are no longer sufficient to navigate a changing international order and technological shifts.

Party leader Lauri Läänemets supported the nomination, stating the party aims to bring Estonia back to the heart of Europe. Vseviov, who previously served as Estonia’s ambassador to the United States and secretary general of the defence ministry, emphasized that Estonia must take a more active role in shaping European decisions to ensure its own interests are protected.
