Jonathan Cooper, master Maine violin maker, dies at 76

Jonathan Cooper, a renowned Portland, Maine musician and master violin maker, has died at age 76. His death occurred just before dawn on Labor Day following a recent period of unexpected health decline.

Cooper was recognized as one of approximately 100 master luthiers in the United States. He operated a workshop in Portland for decades, where he used historical techniques to create high-end, custom-made violins. His instruments were highly regarded by a diverse range of professionals, including chamber musicians and folk fiddlers, for their distinct personality and sound.

Beyond his craftsmanship, Cooper was a significant figure in the musical community. He was a decorated fiddler and a former member of the Con Fullam Band, which performed at the opening show of CBGB’s in New York City in 1973. He is remembered by his family and colleagues as a generous mentor who helped launch the careers of young instrument makers.
