Jonathan McDonald announces retirement from professional football

Costa Rican football striker Jonathan McDonald has announced his retirement from professional football. His final match will take place this Sunday at the Alejandro Morera Soto stadium.

McDonald will play his last game wearing the colors of Asociación Deportiva San Carlos in an away match against Liga Deportiva Alajuelense. The announcement was made via a video on his social media accounts, where he invited fans to witness his “last dance” at the venue known as the “Cathedral of Football.”

Over a career spanning more than two decades, McDonald became the third all-time leading scorer in the Costa Rican national championship. His career highlights include significant stints with Alajuelense, where he scored 134 goals and won two national titles, and Club Sport Herediano, where he secured another championship. His professional experience also includes playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS, Kalmar FF in Sweden, Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, and representing the Costa Rica national team.
