Jonathan Rinderknecht faces narrowed charges in Palisades Fire retrial

Federal prosecutors have filed a revised indictment against Jonathan Rinderknecht, narrowing their case ahead of a scheduled retrial for the 2025 Palisades Fire. The wildfire, which killed 12 people and destroyed over 6,800 buildings, remains one of the most destructive in Los Angeles history.

In the new indictment, prosecutors have reduced the number of felony charges from three to two. The first count accuses Rinderknecht of igniting the Lachman Fire on January 1, 2025, using a barbecue lighter. The second charge alleges he caused the subsequent destruction when the blaze flared up on January 7 as the catastrophic Palisades Fire.

The move follows a mistrial in June, where a jury deadlocked 10-2 in favor of acquittal. Rinderknecht is expected to return to court for a status conference next week, with the retrial slated to begin in September.
