Jonathan Rinderknecht faces November retrial for 2025 Palisades Fire arson

A retrial for Jonathan Rinderknecht, accused of igniting the 2025 Palisades Fire, has been rescheduled to begin on November 2. The legal proceedings follow a mistrial declared in June after a federal jury deadlocked 10-2 in favor of acquittal on three arson-related charges.

The 2025 firestorm, which killed 12 people and burned 23,448 acres, is alleged by prosecutors to have originated from the Lachman Fire on New Year’s Day. Investigators claim the initial blaze smoldered underground before being re-ignited by Santa Ana winds on January 7, leading to the devastating Palisades Fire that destroyed approximately 6,800 structures.

In a recent superseding indictment, prosecutors reduced the charges against Rinderknecht from three to two. The new counts include destruction of property by means of fire—specifically targeting the Lachman Fire—and arson affecting property used in interstate commerce. Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty to the revised charges and remains in federal custody, as judges have deemed him a danger to the community.
