Jonathan Trott appointed England Lions head coach

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed former England international Jonathan Trott as the head coach of the England Lions. Trott succeeds Andrew Flintoff, who stepped down from the position in August.

Trott will lead the Lions through a demanding winter schedule, which includes 50-over focused tours to the Caribbean, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The ECB stated that the program aims to prepare next-in-line players for one-day international cricket.

Trott brings significant international coaching experience to the role, having previously served as the head coach for Afghanistan, leading them to their first T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024. He also recently served as an assistant coach for the England men’s team and held short-term roles with Ireland and Glamorgan. Prior to his permanent appointment, he stood in as head coach during a recent 2-0 T20 series victory against Sri Lanka.
