Jongno-gu to convert vacant houses into emergency housing

Jongno-gu is launching the ‘SH Vacant House Utilization Emergency Housing Project’ to repurpose long-vacant properties owned by the Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation (SH). The initiative aims to provide temporary shelter and welfare services to vulnerable populations facing sudden housing crises, such as eviction or fire.

The project focuses on an aging two-story detached house in Changsin-dong built in 1974. Under the agreement, Jongno-gu will manage administrative tasks and resident connections, SH will provide the space free of charge, and the Jongno Housing Welfare Center will oversee operations.

Remodeling is expected to be completed this month. The first and second floors will serve as two emergency housing units for family-sized households, while the basement will be converted into a communal cultural space for local residents.

Eligible residents will be selected based on SH standards following recommendations from community centers. The housing is provided free of charge, with residents only responsible for utility costs. The initial stay is for six months, with the possibility of a six-month extension. The first residents are expected to move in following an opening ceremony in September.
